Dale McCourt led the team in scoring with 81 points on 51 goals, followed by Hall of Famer Václav Nedomanský who tallied 74 points with 35 goals. Two Red Wings represented the team in the All Star game; 21-year-old right wing Mike Foligno led the team in goals with 36 and 23-year-old defenseman Reed Larson scored 66 points with 44 assists. The team also included Hall of Fame goaltender Rogie Vachon . The Red Wings finished with a record of 26-43-11 for 5th in the Norris Division and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
