Defenseman Reed Larson had 58 points and earned one of his eight career All Star team selections. The team traded goaltender Jim Rutherford to the Toronto Maple Leafs in December and he would go on to a Hall of Fame “builder” career as an NHL executive that included three Stanley Cup Championships as a general manager with the Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Red Wings finished the season 19-43-18 for 5th in the Norris Division and did not qualify for the playoffs.
