Antique Hand-colored Bird Print by Jean Emmanuel Marie Le Maout of France We offer several very colorful prints from painter Le Maout’s Historie Naturelle des Oiseau (Paris, 1853, second edition 1855), part of his Les Trois Regnes de la Nature. Especially colorful birds from many parts of the world were chosen by Le Maout, mostly painted from skins, I believe; many were hand-colored by William H. Freeman. These very handsome prints, ca. 6.5” wide x 10 3/8” tall, all feature lovely flowering plants and/or butterflies with birds that are accurately depicted. All these are in excellent condition. Le Maout’s prints are little known and rare. Here an adult Pin-tailed Manakin (now Ilicura militaris ), found only in southeast Brazil; it’s shown with tubular orange flowers and is in fine condition. $110
