William Brownfield Aesthetic Gilded Nautilus Creamer ca 1891. Using seashell shapes is nothing new, the Romans did it a bunch of millennia ago. This is Brownfield’s foray into the natural world and they have done so with great sensitivity. It is a fine example of Brownfield’s pottery craft. Beautiful piece. Markings: England 5181 Using seashell shapes is nothing new, the Romans did it a bunch of millennia ago. By the time this came along, Belleek in Ireland was noted for its patterns based on animal life. This is Brownfield’s foray into the natural world and they have done so with great sensitivity. It could be entirely by accident that when picks up this piece of porcelain, one initially thinks it is Belleek or Worcester. It is an elegant example of Aesthetic design with interest created by showing the growth ridges of the shell, like striping. Unlike other examples of this piece, the gilding here is quite restrained appearing only on the handle, the rim, and very subtly on the top of the shell. It is a fine example of Brownfield’s pottery craft. The attribution is based on other examples which have the full Browfield mark that dates from 1891, absent entirely from this creamer.
