Size is 11mm wide x 12mm long x 5mm dome height, 7.4 carats. The star reflection phenomena is caused by a specific arrangement of microscopic inclusions in the stone. This phenomena is called asterism. Asterism is generated by reflections of light from extremely fine needle-shaped acicular inclusions within the stone's crystal structure. A common cause is oriented sub-microscopic crystals of rutile within the gem mineral. It occurs in rubies, sapphires, garnet, diopside, and spinel when a cabochon is cut from a suitable stone. The general formula for most of the garnets is A3B2(SiO4)3 . The A represents divalent metals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and/or manganese. The B represents trivalent metals such as aluminum, chromium, iron and/or manganese and in the rarer garnets; vanadium, titanium, zirconium and/or silicon.
