Originally conceived as a historical documentary tracing the band’s legacy, the film—tentatively titled The Long and Winding Road—was proposed by Apple’s Neil Aspinall. It was planned as a theatrical release and would compile archival footage, including live performances and interviews. Though development rumors continued into the 1970s, the project was ultimately shelved and never released. As many fans know, the idea was eventually revived in the 1990s and realized as The Beatles Anthology. However, this set reconstructs the original Long and Winding Road concept using newly selected audio and video sources, making it a definitive collector's edition. The CD includes 26 tracks in chronological order from the band’s debut to their breakup—essentially a reconstructed song soundtrack. While some material overlaps with the Anthology series, all tracks are sourced from entirely different audio masters. Even mono originals have been upgraded to newly remastered AI stereo versions, creating a completely fresh compilation of rare and alternate recordings. The DVD features “The Video Masters”—a newly edited version based on the original documentary vision, now enhanced with AI colorization and restoration. Early monochrome footage such as “Some Other Guy” from the Cavern Club or the British TV performance of “Yesterday” has been vividly brought back to life in color. Additionally, the second DVD features The Original Workprint Film—the unfinished 1970s version of The Long and Winding Road.
