Description If one understands the culture of the Li people (Lí zú) of Hainan Island, one is inevitably led to reconsider one’s own ancestors as bearers of a “coexisting civilization” that existed before the nation-state, before writing systems, and before centralized rule. This is not a romantic theory of origins, but a conclusion drawn from comparative analysis of civilizational structures that is difficult to ignore even from an academic standpoint. In short, Li culture is not an “other” culture to Japanese culture, but rather a mirror through which we can recognize cultural layers that Japan once abandoned, yet which were never completely lost. The origins of the Li people are generally traced to the “Baiyue” world, but what exactly were the Baiyue? And from the perspective of that Baiyue sphere, what was the ancient Japanese name “Wa”? The Baiyue was not a single ethnic group, but rather a broad cultural sphere spanning the coastal, estuarine, and island regions of Jiangnan, Fujian, Guangdong, and Hainan—defined by a shared civilization of water, rice agriculture, and body inscription (tattooing). Within this Baiyue world, societies did not rush toward state formation; instead, they used the body as a medium of record, practiced a coexistence of rice cultivation and fishing, and lived in relation to natural boundaries such as mountains, rivers, and seas. The Japanese archipelago can be understood as an extension of this civilizational sphere. From the Baiyue perspective, the “Wa people” were those who maintained a Baiyue-like way of life beyond the reach of the Central Plains states, across the sea. In other words, “Wa” was not a designation of primitiveness or backwardness, but rather an outer extension of Baiyue civilization. In this sense, elements of Wa culture correspond in deep structural ways with the culture of the Li people in Hainan. By studying Li culture, it becomes possible to reconstruct, from an external comparative standpoint, the “Wa civilizational layer” that disappeared from Japanese history through processes of state formation and textualization. Li culture can thus be understood as a living comparative reference that preserves aspects of a coexisting, bodily, and feminine-principled civilization once associated with the ancestors of the Japanese people referred to as Wa. Through the study of Li culture, one may re-examine the civilizational layer of “Wa” that was erased from recorded history. The term “Wa” itself should perhaps be understood not as a pejorative label or a mythological construct, but as the name of one civilizational option among others.
