Ironwood RARE FIGURED CHATOYANCE - TURNING BLANK - American EasternHophornbeam. Excellent for high-wear surfaces or heirloom-quality builds. These trees often do not get very large and are not readily available as lumber and I've never seen any for sale. Ideal for fine woodworking, tool handles, flooring, and projects demanding both durability and elegance. What you see is a wonderfully figured piece of American Hophornbeam, commonly called Ironwood (or hardhack, around here). yes, sparks will come off your chainsaw when cutting this. Ironwood, also known as american (eastern) hop hornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) is extremely hard and dense. This wood is from a tree that was just over 100 years old and had fallen in the woods. This was carefully milled on our sawmill and air dried under cover for 2 years. It was then carefully machined into these wonderful pieces. These particular piece has wonderful figuring and very nice chatoyancy, which may be hard to see in the pictures but reminds me of quarter sawn mahogany. This would make a spectacular project. Flattened and squared on 3 sides. Eastern Hop Hornbeam is perfect for cutting boards, knife scales, instrument parts, durable drawer fronts, tool handles, mallets, or contrasting accents in furniture, and especially great for turning with it's tight grain and unusual figuing patterns. It has a color that is a bit similar to cherry but with much smaller growth rings and more interesting grain pattern (reminds me of mahogany). NOTE: American Hop Hornbeam (Ironwood) is often confused on the internet with other woods, especially with blue beech (commonly called muscle wood) which is also known as hop hornbeam (note the lack of American/Eastern in the name). The color ranges from a pale tan or light brown to medium honey tones, often darkening slightly with age or oil finish. Workability: Though very hard, it machines cleanly with sharp tools and takes a superb polish. Gluing and finishing are generally easy with proper surface prep. Stability: Excellent dimensional stability with minimal seasonal movement. Great for precise joinery or inlays.
