Description This photography collection captures the Nara Juvenile Prison, a brick-built structure from the Meiji era, in the final work of photographer Michio Kamijo, portraying the facility from its main gate to interior as a space often described as a “beautiful prison.” It is one of the five major Meiji-era prisons and among the oldest modern prisons in Japan, uniquely preserving its original complex. Designated an Important Cultural Property in 2016 as the “Former Nara Prison,” it is set to be preserved and repurposed after closure. The book also situates the site within late Meiji-era development, when major institutions were established in Nara, highlighting its role in Japan’s modernization. Influenced by Western ideas of human rights, the prison is also known for its rehabilitation programs. The latter half features interviews with 25 individuals connected to the prison, covering education, community ties, preservation efforts, and personal experiences, alongside architectural insights from specialists.
