A Masterpiece of Summer Nights: The Transparent Mosquito Net This extraordinary artwork is "Women Guests at an Inn" (Fujin Tomarikyaku no Zu) by the grand master of Ukiyo-e, Kitagawa Utamaro. Designed as a grand triptych (three contiguous standard oban prints), it masterfully depicts women preparing for bed inside and outside a large, vibrant green mosquito net. The genius of this piece lies in its transparency. The figures sitting and relaxing inside the net are delicately visible through the fine mesh, capturing the subtle, cooling atmosphere of an Edo-period summer night. The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints This artwork is a faithful reproduction crafted by the highly skilled artisans of the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints. Inheriting the advanced techniques born in the Edo period, these contemporary masters use the exact same materials and traditional production methods. Printed on authentic Echizen Kizuki Hosho paper, it brings the exquisite details of Utamaro's vision back to life. Seller's Note When I look at this print, I feel a profound respect for Utamaro. He chose not to depict a lavish, gorgeous historical scene, but rather a simple, ordinary moment of daily life. Yet, beneath this quiet beauty lies an astonishing level of craftsmanship. Take a close look at the mosquito net. In Japanese, we might call this kind of design "shokunin-nakase" (a task that makes craftsmen cry). To express the sheer fabric of the net, the woodblock carvers had to carve the unimaginably fine vertical and horizontal threads separately into the wood. The printer then meticulously layered these delicate lines to complete the fabric. When I stare at those intersecting lines, I cannot help but imagine how endlessly far the finish line must have felt for those unnamed carvers. The quiet, overwhelming patience required to create this piece is truly mind-boggling. I hope this print allows you to feel not only the relaxing summer breeze of the Edo period but also the staggering dedication of the Japanese craftsmen who brought it to life.
