The story follows the life of Selina Peake DeJong, a determined gambler's daughter who becomes a teacher in a rural Illinois farming community. After her husband's death, she struggles alone to manage the farm and raise her son, Dirk, whom she nicknames "So Big" So Big was a major commercial and critical success. It was the first book to be both a bestseller of the year and a Pulitzer Prize winner.
