Wonderful 5x7 inch reprinted photo of the famous rail car ferry named DETROIT. Built in 1904 by the Michigan Central Railroad at the Great Lakes Engineering Works, the railroad car ferry DETROIT was designed to carry loaded rail cars across the Detroit River, linking U.S. and Canadian rail networks before tunnels and bridges made crossings easier. The ferry entered service several years before the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel opened in 1910. After the tunnel reduced the need for ferry service, DETROIT was sold to the Wabash Railroad and remained in use under various owners for decades. Railroad car ferries like DETROIT played a critical role in Great Lakes transportation, allowing freight cars to roll directly on and off vessels and keeping rail traffic moving across major waterways.
