The photographer Robert Heinecken was way ahead of his time, as is proved by this artists book of 1979/1980. "He:/She:" is in the form of a spiral notebook: coil binding, thick paperback cover . 66 pg. 15 1/4" x 7 3/4" Its pages pair Polaroid-style photos of couples, who seem to be drawn from advertising, with imagined repartee between men and women.The sexual content is mostly only implied, but it is ever present. The photos are so generic, they could be selling toothpaste or tennis rackets. Certainly, they say nothing about human relationships. It should be noted that Heinecken created this book more than a decade before "Men Are from Mars, Women are from Venus," yet both speak to fundamental differences between women and men in the dating game.
