Postcard Orwell Bridge Estuary Carriageway Ipswich Suffolk Coast Anglia England The new Orwell Bridge was opened in December, 1982. It is 1,300 metres long and is situated at the estuary of the River Orwell in Suffolk. It is built of reinforced concrete cast in situ, and at the time of completion had the longest pre-stressed concrete span in the United Kingdom. The main span for navigational purposes is 190 metres long. and the carriageway is 47 metres above the high water mark, thus ensuring that vessels up to a height of 41.5 metres can pass under the bridge. Suffolk is a ceremonial county in the East of England and East Anglia. It is bordered by Norfolk to the north, the North Sea to the east, Essex to the south, and Cambridgeshire to the west. Ipswich is the largest settlement and the county town. The county has an area of 3,798 km² and a population of 758,556.
