History: This week we will be listing, various Felix De Weldon's personal archive from the Historian Rodney Hilton Brown estate, he obtained these from Felix in the 1990s when he was selling off his personal processions. In addition Rodney wrote a book on feilx's monuments. Felix de Weldon was an Austrian-born sculptor best known for the Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, in Washington, D.C.. After early training in Vienna and work in London, including busts of British royalty, he immigrated to the United States, served in the Navy during WWII, and became a U.S. citizen in 1945. He is recognized for creating over 1,200 public commissions, including numerous portrait busts of American presidents, and was appointed to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1963. While in the Navy, he created a small model of the famous flag-raising photograph from Iwo Jima. This model inspired a congressional commission for the large-scale Marine Corps War Memorial, which was dedicated in 1954. Notable works: In addition to the Iwo Jima Memorial, his public works include the American Red Cross Memorial, the Seabees Monument, the National Guard Monument, and equestrian statues. He also created many portrait busts of U.S. presidents, including Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy.
