Suda, who passed away in March 2019, was one of Japan's most representative post-war photographers. Born in 1940, he dominated the monthly camera magazine competitions in the 1960s alongside his contemporary, Nobuyoshi Araki, who is said to have held him in high regard even at that time. Against the backdrop of Japan's post-war high-growth period—a time when many traditional cultures, customs, and identities were being lost or collapsing—Suda captured this reality from a folkloric perspective. His "magical" depictions, created using a 6x6 format, at times evoke an eerie, unsettling atmosphere of another world. He creates a unique worldview where the everyday and the extraordinary intersect. This book is a collection of recent works that Suda repeatedly reviewed and carefully selected after surviving a near-death experience with a "flesh-eating bacteria" infection.
