Died November 6, 1893, in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky did not take up music seriously until he was 22, originally studying law and entering the government civil service. But in 1863 he quit his boring job as a clerk in the a czar's Ministry of Justice to enter the newly founded St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he was considered rather foppish at first, and his inability to win approval for his compositions led to a nervous breakdown. He moved to Moscow, where he became a music critic and teacher and continued to compose - eventually winning recognition. A brief, unsuccessful marriage when he was 34 led to another nervous collapse. Some believe his recovery was aided by his ability to pour his complex emotional feelings into his music - and that this quality marks many of the great Romantic symphonies, concertos and ballet scores he composed during the rest of his lifetime. One of the great masters of Impressionistic orchestral and piano works (which create or reflect a mood or image rather than relate a dramatic sequence). From his earliest student years at the Paris Conservatory, Ravel tried to keep his private life completely private. A bachelor, he once told an interviewer, "Music is my only mistress." Much of his music reflects the mystery, elegance and emotional coolness that marked his personal life style. World War 1 affected him deeply, however, and led him in the last decade of his life to turn back to more Classical musical forms - into which he sometimes introduced elements of the American jazz he had grown to love from several visits to the United States.
