Description
c1860s CDV Photo of Alexandra of Denmark the Princess of Wales. This is a CDV photo of Alexandra of Denmark, the Princess of Wales before becoming Queen consort. His candidacy for the Spanish throne helped contribute to the tension resulting in the Franco-Prussian War. I am currently offering 19th century cartes-de-visite photos found in a disintegrating period mother-of-pearl album from New Zealand. The photos were collected by and given to a prominent early Dunedin New Zealand settler and colonist named Rob Redmayne, and many of the CDVs in this album feature identified, prominent individuals from the colonial and New Zealand Gold Rush time. Many were taken in prominent New Zealand photographic studios in the Dunedin and Otago region. The identified photographs were verified through image/location searches, perusal of New Zealand museum archives containing identified historic photos, and, in some cases, Wikipedia pages. This is a CDV photo of Alexandra of Denmark, the Princess of Wales before becoming Queen consort. His candidacy for the Spanish throne helped contribute to the tension resulting in the Franco-Prussian War. The portrait was taken by German photographer Joseph Albert, who invented the Albertype process and was the official Court Photographer to the Bavarian Royal House. This is one of the backstamps Mr. Albert used during the 1860s and 1870s. The photographic technology to produce the smaller cartes-de-visites (CDVs) was only a few years old at the time this portrait was taken, and it became popular for those who could afford to keep a CDV photo album at the time to collect commercially sold photographic prints of famous and notable individuals who sat for a portrait in the lucky photographic studios that sold them. They are indeed real photographs, not photos of paintings or photos of photos, and collectors call them "album fillers". PLEASE NOTE THAT A GREAT MANY PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THIS ALBUM WERE INSCRIBED "REDMAYNE" OR "R. REDMAYNE" ON THE BACK DESPITE BEING OF MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE--AND SOMETIMES CONTAINING A DIFFERENT NAME AS WELL. REDMAYNE WAS NOT THE SUBJECT OF THESE PHOTOS; HE WAS THE COLLECTOR OF THEM, THE OWNER OF THE ALBUM THEY WERE FOUND IN. HIS NAME WAS INSCRIBED ON THE BACKS EITHER BY THE PEOPLE WHO GAVE HIM THE PHOTOS OR BY THE STUDIOS HE ORDERED PRINTS FROM. International buyers, this will be shipped USPS as a non-machinable letter in a rigid cardboard mailer. I offer combined shipping.
