Be sure to view ALL of the photographs below this description!** …… This could be one of the most important paintings that we have ever offered on eBay. This early 19th-century stretched-canvas Oil Painting depicts a dramatic scene of the death of Joan of Arc and has been attributed to Eugène (Ferdinand Victor) Delacroix (1798-1863). Delacroix is regarded as one of the most important and influential French painters of the 19th century and the undisputed leader of the Romantic Movement. Rejecting the rigid traditions of Neoclassicism, Delacroix revolutionized European painting through his dramatic compositions, expressive brushwork, and bold use of color. His innovative techniques profoundly influenced generations of artists, including Manet, Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. Today his paintings hang in the world's greatest museums, including the Louvre, and authentic examples remain among the most sought-after works of 19th-century European art. ...... Before we get into describing the painting itself, please take a moment to read our consignor’s letter of provenance below, which recounts the history of the painting that is known to him. (A hand-signed copy of this provenance letter will be shipped to the high bidder along with this painting.) To whom it may concern, ...I purchased this painting, attributed to Eugène Delacroix, approximately ten years ago at Coyle's Antique Auction in Medway, Massachusetts. Since acquiring the painting, it has remained in my possession and has not been offered for sale or otherwise been on the market. …At the time of purchase, I was informed that the painting had previously been donated to a church by a parishioner. The church was unsure what to do with it, so it was stored in a back room, in its wooden crate, for many years, and eventually consigned to the auction when the church's estate was liquidated. Although I was not told the name or location of the church, the original owner's name and address is inscribed along the bottom edge of the wooden shipping crate. According to his obituary online, Luigi P. Visco (1915-2005) of New London, Connecticut, was a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London, Connecticut, and the Holy Name Society. …I also researched the another's owner's name "Arthur M. Horne" found on the label attached to the stretcher and learned that he was the Treasurer of Shreve, Crump & Low of Boston. I have no further history or provenance concerning this painting. …… Executed on an early canvas and retaining its wooden stretcher, this 19th-century Oil Painting measures 29 5/8" by 23 3/4". Although unsigned, it is well documented that Delacroix left many of his paintings unsigned, particularly preliminary studies and works that remained in his studio. We have searched extensively and could not locate another example of this composition or any reference to it among Delacroix's known paintings. Therefore, we guarantee this is not a copy of any published or cataloged Delacroix composition. The dramatic subject matter, rich earth-tone palette, energetic brushwork, and overall composition are all characteristics that compare favorably with many known and documented works by this prolific artist. …… We have posted several close-up photographs of both the surface of the painting, edges of the canvas, the verso and the stretcher. You can see several labels and inscriptions on the stretcher, including the typed label from Arthur M. Horne, Treasurer of Shreve, Crump & Low of Boston. Written in ink across this label is "Joan of Arc by E. Delacroix." To the left is the remnant of another early label bearing the handwritten name "Delacroix," while the artist's surname is also inscribed directly on the upper left edge of the stretcher. Along the lower edge of the stretcher appears the owner's surname "Visco," together with several additional early inscriptions that are now too dark to decipher. … Also included is the original wooden shipping crate. One side bears the owner's surname, while the bottom edge is inscribed with his full name and New London, Connecticut, address, along with collection number GI-2-5823. …… As expected of a painting of this age, the surface has darkened over time, and it could benefit from a professional restoration to help bring out the artist's true colors. There are several condition issues, including a short tear at the bottom, a few tiny holes, scattered paint fleacks, and stretcher-lines, all of which you can see in our photographs. This unknown Delacroix Oil Painting is being offered exactly as it came to us, in its original, untouched condition. We have have posted several photographs of this painting under black-light. Although you can see some small dark blue areas in these photographs, we have looked closely and there is no evidence of any part restoration. We will leave any conservation or restoration entirely to the discretion of the new owner. …… Authentic paintings by Eugène Delacroix have realized prices ranging from several thousand dollars to well over one million dollars, depending upon the subject, size, and importance of the work. Our consignor certainly could have pursued authentication and consigned this painting through one of the major international auction houses. Instead, he has chosen to offer it here on eBay, trusting our loyal following of collectors and scholars to evaluate it for themselves.
