Painted on artist-board, this small painting measures 6" by 8" and comes in a period wood frame measuring 7 1/4" by 9 1/4". The reverse retains its original Kensington Canvas Sketching Panels label which is inscribed in pencil, "Where the Tide Comes In... I.G.B. Lothrop." …… We were able to locate references to Isabella Graham Campbell Lothrop (born c. 1858), a Detroit regionalist artist, craftsperson, writer, and member of the prominent Lothrop-Campbell family of Michigan. Sources indicate she studied under William Merritt Chase, was a charter member of the Grosse Pointe Historical Society, and was known for painting American Indian, frontier, and historical genre subjects, as well as providing illustrations for publications.
