In Virginia City, she was in charge of Cad Thompson's high class parlor house, the Brick. Rosa May's beauty and intelligence provided her with a high place in the Comstock's prostitution hierarchy. In Carson City, she was one of Mary Ann Phillips' prettiest girls. In later years, she ran a thriving prostitution and gambling business in Bodie with her lover, Ernest Marks. She died in Bodie while nursing miners through a pneumonia epidemic. Despite her efforts to save lives, Rosa May was banished to the outcast cemetery. Her grave was lost over the years. In 1975 on a trip to the ghost town of Bodie, California, George Williams re-discovers Rosa May's grave. He is deeply touched by the unfairness of her story. He decides to learn for himself if the story is true. He begins an obsessed search that lasts 3½ years and takes him more than 20,000 miles through the back country of California and Nevada for traces of Rosa May's past. He finds and interviews old-timers who lived in Bodie and knew Rosa May. He scours courthouse records, early newspapers and Federal and State records. He eventually discovers 26 of Rosa May's personal letters which lead William to the truth about Rosa May's life and death. Williams' unusual story is told sensitively and with true com- passion.
