On the night of March 26, 1944, 55 marines from the 384th Naval Infantry Battalion together with 12 soldiers of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, under the command of Senior Lieutenant K. F. Olshansky, landed near the city of Nikolayev. The assault group traveled about 25 kilometers along the Southern Bug River in fishing boats and occupied defensive positions near the port elevator. German forces launched repeated attacks using infantry, tanks, mortars, flamethrowers, and even poisonous gas and smoke grenades. The Soviet marines repelled 16 enemy attacks. Out of the 67 participants, 55 were killed, but the group held its position until Soviet troops arrived. All 67 members of the landing operation were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
