We have had this Antique Oil Painting in our possession for many years and if you are a longtime follower of our auctions, you may even recognize it! That is because we sold it over 6 years ago, for over $5,000. At that time we were unable to identify the artist, the teams or even the location however, we had sold a very similar painting to it, 4 years prior, for over $15,000, and we assumed it was by the same artist, from the same series. ... After selling this painting in 2020, the high bidder decided to return it for a full refund because he just "didn't feel right about it." We decided to hold onto it for a short while before re-listing and then it was, out of sight out of mind. ...... Now fast forward to 2026, where the internet has grown leaps and bounds and so have our research capabilities. We now know exactly with this antique oil painting is and we are going to properly describe it below. As always, there is No Reserve on this auction and we give a 100% unconditional money-back guarantee as to the age, quality, condition and authenticity or we will return all of the high bidder's money! ...... In our last photograph you will see an image of an 1870 Chromolithograph titled "New York Fashions for 1870" by Hatch & Co. and published by E. Butterick & Co. This large Chromolithograph depicts several 19th-century Baseball Players wearing various team uniforms. One player is laying on the ground holding a baseball that reads, “Peck & Snyder,” which was one of the first producers of baseball sporting equipment and uniforms, and was eventually purchased by A.G. Spalding in the 1890s. ...... The painting in this auction was executed during the 19th-century, by a talented but most-likely self-taught artist. This painter used this 1870 Chromolithograph as inspiration and chose to paint three of the original baseball players shown in this print. From left to right, the first player is wearing a Cincinnati Red Stockings uniform, the center player, shown from behind, is from the Hartford Dark Blues and the third player is from the Mutual Base Ball Club of New York (New York Mutuals). The previously unidentified location of the game in the background is the Union Grounds in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY. The Union Grounds opened in 1862 by William Cammeyer (owner of the New York Mutuals) and was the first fenced-in baseball park. In the background you will see a pagoda, which became a skating rink changing room during the winter time when the grounds were known as Union Pond. The grounds were located between Harrison and Marcy Avenues and Lynch and Rutledge Streets. ...... This 19th-century American Baseball Oil Painting is executed on 12" by 14" stretched canvas and could benefit from a light cleaning as the surface has slightly yellowed over the years. There also is an in-painted restoration to the sky, which you can see in our black-light photographs. This antique painting comes in the original 15 1/2" by 20" gilded frame which has some surface wear and a couple of tiny edge nicks to the gesso. ...
