Dresden Salzberg Porcelain Victorian Couple Figurine w/Lace Hand Painted Carving. Artist/Maker: The blue mark on the bottom features a stylized crown over a ship's wheel or crest, which is the hallmark for Sandizell porcelain (Hoffner & Co.) from West Germany. The "SALZBERG" sticker may refer to a specific collection line or a retailer's tag. Technique: The standout feature is the "porcelain lace" on the woman's skirt. This difficult technique involved dipping real lace in liquid porcelain (slip) before firing; the heat burned away the fabric, leaving behind a delicate ceramic mesh. History: Sandizell was established in 1951 and became famous for these mid-century rococo-style figurines that imitated much older 18th-century "Meissen" or "Dresden" designs. This piece has been sitting in a China cabinet for at least 30 years with me and before that I got it from my mother who purchased it when she visited Germany at least 1015 years before that.
