ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The Art of Love offers a glimpse into one of the most intimate spheres of Roman society: the supposedly infallible rules of courtship."While you can and still live in springtime years, enjoy yourself: the years flow away like running water."With these words, Ovid encourages young women and men seeking easy love. The Art of Love belongs to the early creative period of Publius Ovid Naso (43 BCE - 17 CE), one of the most widely read and studied Latin poets, and an unmatched source of inspiration for later artists. This classic reveals the intimate codes of Roman courtship, offering a playful yet strategic view of love as a game with its own rules and conditions--rules that must be mastered by both men and women to achieve their desired outcome.Modern readers will notice the stark moral and cultural differences of Roman society, while also being surprised by Ovid's witty observations on the everyday aspects of love: from makeup and fashion to jealousy and aphrodisiacs.
