The Russian monk-hero went against a warrior who was famous for his enormous physical strength and was considered invincible before the Battle of Kulikovo. The two horsemen clashed with spears at full gallop and died simultaneously. But Peresvet managed to stay on his horse longer and reach the Russian regiments, which meant his victory. The artist depicted in the painting the moment before the collision: the rapid movement stopped at a moment when the outcome of the fight was still difficult to predict.
